Who should attend this course
Pistol owners who handle their firearms safely under range conditions, and can perform necessary manipulations of their handgun without assistance. Attendees of the class should complete one of the following:
- NSSF First Shots – Handgun Course >
- NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course >
- USCCA Protector Academy Level 1 Qualification >
- Self Defense Firearms Basics Mini Class
- Private training with a Davenport Guns instructor covering the required competencies
- You have been shooting your whole life, but have never taken a formal firearms class (contact instructor)
- Other equivalent training or experience (contact instructor)
Course Description
Real World Defensive Shooting Level 1 is an introductory course covering the technical competencies needed to safely and responsibly engage in defensive pistol training. You will learn about achieving the proper mindset for self-defense, safe and efficient gun-handling, basic defensive shooting techniques, shooting tests and standards, concealment physics and carry gear, and an introduction to the concealed carry draw stroke
What To Bring
Note: Davenport Guns has everything you need to take the class for sale or loan at the store
- A safe, serviceable defensive handgun
- 150 rounds of factory loaded ammunition
- At least one spare magazine, speed loader, or speed strip. More is better.
- Eye and ear protection
- Safe range clothing – closed toed shoes, crew-neck shirt, ball cap with bill to deflect brass away from the eyes and face.

Lesson 1 – Mental Preparation for self-defense, and establishing training priorities
Lesson 2 – Safe gun-handling and risk mitigation
Lesson 3 – Developing a high degree of confidence and competence in critical gun-handling tasks
Lesson 3 – Basic defensive handgun shooting techniques
Lesson 4 – Measuring progress – Shooting tests and standards
Lesson 5 – Concealment physics and carry gear
Lesson 6 – Introduction to the concealed carry drawstroke and safe re-holstering techniques
Lesson 7 – Dry fire training, how to do it safely and effectively
PUBLIC CLASS
Private class can be arranged for groups of 5 or more.
